Close to Montrouge or the Kremlin-Bicêtre, it enjoys excellent transport links to the rest of the region. The name formerly known as Gentiliacum takes its present name at the end of the 13th century. Shared between different abbeys and a seigneury in the Middle Ages, the territory developed over the centuries, notably with the creation of the Medici aqueduct in the 17th century. The city became a major industrial center in the 19th century, particularly in the laundry and tanning industry on the banks of the Bièvre. Today, focused on the tertiary sector, Gentilly is known for its involvement in the audiovisual field. Ancient, the municipality still has some monuments and other tourist sites testifying to its past and its importance in history. Built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th century, the church of Saint-Saturnin was built on the remains of an abbey of the seventh century designed by Saint Eloi. On the western façade there is a neo-Gothic portal built in the 19th century, as well as some very old stained-glass windows in the polygonal choir. Classified as Historic Monuments, it has many painted decorations, notably of lily flowers, being restored. The Sacré-Cœur church is also part of the international university city of Paris. Built in the 1930s, it mixes Neoroman and Byzantine styles and is entirely made of reinforced concrete and limestone slabs. You can admire beautiful abstract stained glass, as well as sculptures by Georges Saupique and paintings by Angel Zarraga. The house of photography Robert Doisneau was inaugurated in the years 1990 for the 80 years of the famous French artist. It offers exhibitions of humanist photographs throughout the year. The cemetery of Gentilly has a breathtaking view of the towers of the XIIIth arrondissement of Paris and on the south-east of the Capital.
