Property Description
Luxury manor house dating from the 17th century.
This solar is a former military facility used in World War II. It is a historic property located in a historic area (Fajã de Baixo), near Ponta Delgada, the main city of the Azores.
Fajã de Baixo has a slightly uneven ground, is low and flat in its central space.
The history of the parish of Fajã de Baixo can be divided into three distinct agro-economic cycles, the vine cycle corresponding to the 16th and 17th centuries, the orange cycle to the 18th and 19th centuries and the pineapple cycle to the 19th and 20th centuries. This last fruit crop, practiced in glass greenhouses, is the emblematic activity of the parish, and from the “Diário da Guerra Civil”, by the Marquis of Sá da Bandeira, it is known that, as early as 1829, the English consul W. Harding Read he grew pineapples, for his own consumption, in a small greenhouse with ornamental plants he had at Quinta da Bela Vista.
It was at the outbreak of the 2nd World War that one of the worst crises in fruit production took place. In the two years after the end of the war, exports to London were resumed, but along the way there were several producers who, unable to bear the costs inherent to the crisis caused by the war, would drop their activity. London's economic weakness has led growers to find new destinations to host the fruit.
Countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Italy and the United States of America, mainland Portugal, emerge as hypotheses.
Faced with the crisis that affected the immense orange groves of S. Miguel, Fajã de Baixo, over time, became the largest pineapple production center on the entire island of S. Miguel, - and the prosperity as a result, especially in the period between the two European wars, earned him the affectionate epithet of
“City of Berlin”.
In 1875, São Miguel was home to greenhouses for 40,000 pineapples concentrated in the southern part of the island. In 1913, the export of the fruit to countries such as England, Germany and Russia generated revenues in the order of 200,000 pounds.
Due to the excellent position it occupies in relation to the city, Fajã de Baixo has always been a privileged place for summer vacations and its landscape, covered with the white camp of the greenhouses shining in the sun, also has some beautiful manor houses, with its emblazoned porticos and the setting provided by farms, orchards and leafy old gardens.
With the new outlying neighborhoods of the city and even apartment buildings, you can still see the traces of old life, evident in the houses of various eras and styles, as well as in the arches, fountains and towers that make Fajã a space of undeniable historical and cultural interest.
Fajã de Baixo is undoubtedly the “garden of the city”.
The manor is surrounded by nature with a garden made up of local plants and centenary trees. The patios have large bonsai trees and electric awnings.
